About Dune 3
Finally, Dune 3 has an official date in the calendar, but we will have to remain frog in the well for as long as it takes to watch the third motion picture based on Frank Herbert’s universe.
Towards the end of June 2024, it was reported that an event film scheduled for December 2026 was previously referred as untitled Denis Villeneuve film. It was later confirmed via an IMAX presentation towards the end of July 2024 that it was in fact a Dune movie.
And after the global success achieved Dune Part Two, now streaming on Max in the USA, called Max after the merger of HBO and Discovery, it was confirmed by the production company Legendary that Denis Villeneuve will return for the third film.
And as he has been dropping hints since the first one, Villeneuve will be returning to the Dune universe to adapt the book sequel Dune Messiah and complete the Dune trilogy.
When Villeneuve announced it officially in April 2024, he gave The New York Times an update about the progress of the threequel: “Secrets cannot last forever. It is not that easy. I can say that I know what I have to do, and what I want.
So as the countdown begins for the release of the third movie, which we will pray will not come late than December 2026, let us see briefly what Dune 3 is all about.
Dune 3 release date: When can we expect Dune Part 3 in cinemas?
Dune 3 will hit theatres, as it has been officially announced to release on December 18, 2026 for the fans.
Also, in June 2024 the Warner Bros “untitled Denis Villeneuve film” was slotted for a December 2026 release which subsequently got confirmed as an untitled Dune film during an IMAX event in July 2024.
It was further reported in June 2024 that the last action was carried out by Villeneuve regarding the script, and the rest of the cast had not been secured yet. That means we could get a delay, and this is going to take time, but it is close enough to allow for reasonable hope that everything is going according to plan.
While the third installment is unlikely to be released until after two years, there is another new helping of Dune coming first in the form of prequel series Dune: Prophecy later this year as well.
The new series is set about 10,000 years earlier than the films and focuses on the beginnings of the Bene Gesserit, this time about two sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen.
We can expect Max to release it in November 2024 in the US, Sky in the UK, but for now the specific date is still missing.
Dune 3 cast: Will Zendaya be in Dune 3?
We understand why there would be such fears about Dune 2’s ending implying that Zendaya wouldn’t come back to the character of Chani, but we would be quite astonished if she didn’t since Chani has a role in Dune Messiah.
As for predicting cast members, we don’t want to reiterate that we don’t officially know who’s coming back, but quite a few names can already be presumed for Dune 3 more or less basing on who is in the novel:
- Paul Atreides – Timothée Chalamet
- Chani – Zendaya
- Princess Irulan – Florence Pugh
- Gaius Mohiam – Charlotte Rampling
- Stilgar – Javier Bardem
- Alia Atreides – Anya Taylor-Joy
There should not be difficulty in having Chalamet on board for the third movie as the actor’s cash rich contract with Warner Bros was signed on March 26, 2024.
As part of the multi-year multifilms obligation, he is free to do films with other companies also but Warner Brothers will have the first opportunity for the endeavors.
While in the preceding film, Florence Pugh did not have a terrific screen time, Villeneuve has already made it clear that Princess Irulan’s character will be more developed in the third movie, “That’s a valid point.
“I presented Chani to the audience in Dune and then she comes back as one of the protagonists of Part two. I do the same with Florence, I am only introducing her in Part Two and if there is a Dune Messiah, she goes back as one of the protagonists.”
Yet everyone knows that’s not going to be the last Dune film. Villeneuve, for his part, is already planning Two and Two’s opening scenes. “I would love to make Dune Messiah for the sole reason of working with her and Florence more,” he told EW.
All those actresses are so inspiring to me. They give me shivers and the desire to make another one.” Knowing there is going to be a third movie for sure, a whole lot of Pugh and Taylor-Joy on your screens next time around. The latter has already sort of implied that she will most likely be there for the third movie.
You only hear characters of Lady Jessica (Rebecca Freguson, ‘Dune’), Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin, ‘Dune’) and Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken, ‘Dune’) in Dune Messia, but do not be surprised if Villeneuve incorporates them somehow into his version of the tale.
However, Ferguson’s return is something he wishes for knowing that “it is completely out of my hands.” “As long as my character doesn’t go and sit [somewhere] hot and packed in fabrics, I’m happy,” she explained.
But the actor Stephen McKinley Henderson wasn’t back as Thufir Hawat in the sequel because Villeneuve was concentrating on the Bene Gesserit. Perhaps Villeneuve can find a way for him in the third movie, but he also wasn’t in Dune Messiah.
Tim Blake Nelson was also cut from the sequel and we all know in the Great Feature who Tim Blake Nelson was supposed to play – besides rumors of him as Count Fenring her husband of Lady Margot, nothing else is known. Especially since it was so shameful that he very well deserves, now may be in the third such movie.
Lady Margot Fenring, a member of the Bene Gesserit order featured in this movie, was played by Léa Seydoux in Dune: Part Two but to a minor extent. Lady Margot is also missing in Dune Messiah, although this does not mean she will not return in the next movie.
Will Jason Momoa be in Dune 3?
Despite the absence of Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho in the first part, Dune book readers have always known enough that his character does not end there and vice versa.
Later, in Dune Messiah, Duncan Idaho reincarnates as a ghola, which is an artificial copy of a man, given to Paul. However, it is a gift which is accompanied by dread but we will drop that for the moments.
It cannot be said that the story of Dune 3 promises a similar return for Duncan Idaho, however, if that is the case it would surely be played by Momoa.
He is of course ready to go back to work if Villeneuve intends to resurrect Duncan Idaho. Dune 3
Dune 3 plot: What happens in Dune Messiah?
Following the pattern set during adaptation of the previous book, for instance, Villeneuve remained relatively faithful to predictably Herbert’s book in the Dune: Part Two, however, some things were different.
For instance, in Dune: Part Two, Chani and Paul do not end up together because when Paul starts a jihad, Chani rides away into the desert, while by the end of the second movie, Paul’s sister Alia should be born. Like in the end of the book, – she killed the Baron by that time. Dune 3
Such changes will probably require some readjustment on how Dune Messiah will be adapted onto the film screen. A similar adaptation, however, generally sticks to the expectations of the audience as to the narrative of Herbert.
Dune Messiah: It is a sequel of the novel “Dune” and takes place twelve years after the events in the first book . Paul, however, has to deal with the fact that although the Harkonnens have been defeated, their supremacy has bred destruction within the universe, resulting in the holy war, and billions dead in its wake.
Making perception of Paul more complex, the fighting dies down after Princess Irulan solves Paul’s new problems and Paul loses too many allies because of his former allies’ betrayals, which means a decision must be made to determine the outcome of the future of the universe.
Dune Messiah was a sequel that Herbert preempted his reader’s inquiry on why Paul was made a hero at the end of Dune, which was indeed the last goal.
Villeneuve’s take on Dune has already made that clear, especially at the climax of Dune 2, so such leeway would make it easier for the director during the adaption of Dune Messiah to the third movie. Dune 3
As Zendaya teased to Digital Spy, do not expect the end of the Love story of Paul and Chani to end up happy.
“It just becomes a massive distraction and confusion and point of contention for her. So yeah, I think it’s far more than a love interest, so much as a complicated relationship that love gets in the way of,” she explained.
“And how are these two characters going to reconcile with that? I don’t know how they get over it. I don’t know what their future holds. Without giving it away, it ain’t pretty.”
Dune 3 trailer: Any footage of Dune Part 3 yet?
Now, the date set for the release of the said movie is a fact. But Dune 3 is yet to go into film production and so blurred footage is a distant thought. Sorry.
