LASIK Technology : The Advancements and Evolution of LASIK Surgery

LASIK technology evolution has come a long way since its inception. It’s normal to feel a bit overwhelmed when researching LASIK and all the available treatment options. Trying to grasp the science behind laser eye surgery, deciphering complex terms, and filtering through numerous options can make your head spin. But this journey to better vision shouldn’t feel like a blurry maze.

Think of this article as your guide to cut through the medical jargon and provide clarity about LASIK procedures, making you feel more comfortable with every step towards visual freedom.

A Look Back: The Five Generations of LASIK Technology

The LASIK procedures you hear about today look a lot different than they did decades ago. To appreciate just how far LASIK technology has progressed, it’s helpful to divide it into five distinct generations, each defined by its unique techniques and levels of precision.

First-Generation (1G) LASIK: The Foundation

1G LASIK, sometimes referred to as “basic” LASIK, is where it all started. In this method, the surgeon utilizes a microkeratome, which is essentially a surgical blade, to carefully craft a thin, hinged flap in the cornea.

An excimer laser, which emits ultraviolet light to vaporize corneal tissue, is then employed to reshape the underlying cornea, correcting the refractive error. This approach was considered groundbreaking when first introduced but had limitations compared to current LASIK technology.

Second-Generation (2G) LASIK: Introducing “Bladeless”

A significant leap in LASIK technology evolution came with the introduction of bladeless LASIK. As the name suggests, this generation marked a significant departure from the traditional use of a mechanical blade.

A highly precise laser—the femtosecond laser—was utilized to create the corneal flap, increasing the procedure’s overall safety and predictability. Femtosecond laser technology was a game changer.

Third-Generation (3G) LASIK: Greater Precision

The quest for increased customization in vision correction surgery led to 3G LASIK, which offered two major players: Contoura Vision and SMILE.

Contoura Vision upped the precision by utilizing a “Wavelight Topolyzer VARIO” to take incredibly detailed measurements of your eye, offering a treatment personalized to the specific curves and contours of your cornea. While Contoura was certainly an evolution in precision, SMILE, which stands for Small Incision Lenticule Extraction, changed the game altogether.

Unlike traditional LASIK techniques, SMILE doesn’t rely on creating a flap. Instead, it utilizes a single femtosecond laser to create a small, lens-shaped piece of corneal tissue called a lenticule, which is then gently removed. Topography-guided LASIK is another name for this type of procedure.

Fourth-Generation (4G) LASIK: Beyond the Basics

4G LASIK, specifically the iDesign LASIK procedure, incorporates Wavefront technology. Wavefront technology not only analyzes the corneal surface like Contoura Vision but dives deeper to analyze your entire visual pathway.

This intricate mapping allows iDesign to treat more complex vision problems, including higher-order aberrations. While effective, this personalized treatment does come at an increased cost compared to earlier generations of LASIK technology.

Fifth-Generation (5G) LASIK: Combining Technologies for Superior Results

EagleVision®️ (Elliptical-flap Aberrometry Guided Laser Enhanced Vision) represents a pinnacle in the world of vision correction. Developed by renowned LASIK surgeon Dr. Kerry Assil, EagleVision marries the most effective surgical practices with cutting-edge technological advancements to produce impressive outcomes.

But there is one catch: this level of refinement and expertise in LASIK technology is currently available exclusively at AGEI (Assil Gaur Eye Institute), and there is an added expense for this very advanced form of laser vision correction surgery.

EagleVision is the LASIK of choice for numerous athletes and others whose careers depend on impeccable vision, such as NBA stars like Lebron James.

Comparing LASIK to Other Refractive Surgeries

While this article mainly centers around LASIK technology evolution, other popular options deserve our attention, including PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) and LASEK (Laser-Assisted Subepithelial Keratomileusis) procedures. Like LASIK, these refractive surgeries strive to refine your vision, but each has a different way to do that. Let’s examine what distinguishes them from LASIK.
